We Must Do Better

Authorities are reporting yet another school this morning. The latest incident, in Sante Fe, Texas, is just another name to add the growing list. Ten innocent people were shot and killed.

How many more will it take?

Primary elections are beginning across the country– regardless of your party affiliation, for the love of everything that is good and decent in the world PLEASE PAY ATTENTION to whether or not the candidates you are voting for are willing to fight for stricter gun regulations.

I have friends and family who are not sure that gun control is the right solution. They are worried that this is a slippery slope to liberals taking away all of their weapons.

Stop.

Realistically there is no way that that is going to happen. It is also absurd and is NOT the focus of current legislation.

Sensible gun laws are a way to start protecting not only ourselves but more importantly our children. This issue may not hit you hard until it happens to someone you know and by that time, folks, it is going to be too late.

This is a complex issue and that is only proven by this morning’s shooting– the gunman used a .38 revolver and a shotgun– these are not semi-automatic weapons that most gun control laws would even touch.

BUT. And stay with me here because this is important. This is further proof that there are layers to the problem with guns in our country. Another facet of this problem is basic gun safety–storing weapons in a personalized lockbox such as a bio safe.

We need education.

Frightened parents are unsure of what to do next. I keep hearing the sentiment over and over again that, “we should just keep our kids home.” While I understand the need to keep your children safe, this is not a good long-term solution. We can’t retreat from the world into the relative safety of our houses.

The law is supposed to evolve. We are constantly making regulations that ensure that vehicles are safer. No one is saying, REMOVE ALL CARS AND TRUCKS FROM THE ROAD! Instead, we see that there is a problem and we move towards making them safer. The same can be done with guns.

We can take control of the world that our babies grow up in– that is part of the majesty of this country. If we don’t like something then we can change it. The first step in this process is getting candidates in office who are willing to fight for what we are demanding.

Take off all that frustration and angst and use to propel yourself towards something better. Don’t sit frightened in the confines of your home— go out and fight to make a difference.

If you want to get involved in a positive change, then your first step is to vote smart. Deadlines are fast approaching if you have not registered to vote, or if you have moved or your status has changed. For more information visit https://www.usa.gov/register-to-vote.

We can do better.

We must do better.
