Christmas Traditions

I feel like my Christmas spirit has been rejuvenated. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have always been obsessed with the holidays, but it was losing it’s excitement. And then we had kids.

All of the childhood happiness comes rushing back as “Frosty” becomes a hit again, Santa stories fill your house, and the stockings are stuffed by the chimney with care. You can bring back your favorite holiday traditions or create new ones of your own!

My mother was (is) the Queen of Christmas. Every year, no matter how much money we had, Christmas filled our house from top to bottom. Decorating the tree was a big to-do, and it took forever. It would also have to be strapped on top of my mother’s small vehicle, and I like to think we were the single-mother-version of the Griswald’s. But it’s the little things that I remember, that I want to pass along to my own kids:

*Tangerines, walnuts and chocolate in the bottom of the stocking. Always.

*Presents are opened first thing in the morning, because no one in my family has any self-

control.

*Little gifts are hidden in multiple big boxes, so you never can guess how big your present actually is.

*Waffles and bacon. Always.

*Christmas music blasting.

In my own little family, we’re creating traditions of our own:

*There is a little doll dressed like Santa, wearing antlers, that must be thrown into the Christmas tree to start off decorating. If one person misses, the next ones get to try, until it sticks.

*Every year we pick out ornaments to paint. We put the date on the bottom and laugh at how previous years came out while hanging them up.

*We send out ridiculous holiday cards:

What are your favorite holiday traditions? Are they ones that you’ve had since childhood or are you making up your own?
