Captain’s Log; 03.18.2020

The morning started off alright…it had been raining lightly and the house felt cozy and warm.

But then we tried to do some word games and hell hath done broketh loose. My six-year-old forgot that he had his headphones plugged into the iPad and got up to get a drink of water, taking the entire setup with him. The iPad is still alive…but barely. It now has cracks at both corners and little splinters gravitating towards its middle.

We pulled it together and tried to have a nice Facetime session with the kids’ best friends. But apparently my phone wasn’t big enough to fit all of their heads and after ten minutes everyone was crying.

“She pushed me when I was just trying to show them how I set up Franklin [our giant, over-stuffed bear] on the couch!”

“DID NOT. I FELL. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT.”

“And why are you crying?” I asked the youngest.

“Because I don’t LIKE bananas!”

That sounds right.

We now have a quarantine within a quarantine; each child has been relegated to separate rooms for some alone time. I’m wondering how long this quiet can possibly last…

It is 12:28 pm.

We had another 4 pm long distance happy hour with our neighbors. It gave me an incredible sense of joy just to see other people, even if it was at a distance. We have been trying to come up with creative solutions like “across the street charades” and some games we can play with walkie talkies. For now, we cheers each other from our front yards and shout out conversations because it feels so good to have them. I think we will continue this for the foreseeable future.

We finished our sourdough– and although the kids seem uninterested when we put in the oven, they were very excited to see it come out.

Day three is in the books. Only x amount to go…
