Don’t Worry, Mama– The Cloud of Having a Newborn Does Slowly Lift
Ah. A new year, a new me. Oh wait, no. I’m still the high functioning zombie I was a week ago. But. I feel as if a weight has lifted. A year ago I had our youngest baby. Maybe it’s just finally hitting that one year mark that has made me let go of some of that postpartum anxiety. Maybe starting to get a little bit more “me time” has helped. Or maybe, being completely and utterly overwhelmed forced me to laugh hysterically and say SCREW YOU, UNIVERSE. I AM GOING TO RISE ABOVE. We had a wonderful but stressful Christmas break, filled with lots of loving family but also sickness…

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays
The first year my husband and I were married, we sent out a wedding photo as our Christmas card. The next year, I felt a little stumped for ideas, as I didn’t want to send out a photo of the two of us that was boring– if I’m going to spend the time and effort to make a damn card, and also pay for postage, it better be worth it. We toyed around with the idea of putting on ugly sweaters, of dressing up as reindeer, etc., but nothing was living up to my expectations. Could you photoshop our faces onto someone else’s family if I found a pictures? I…

Girl, You Don’t Know Everything About Parenting
Girl, I’ve got something to say to you: bragging about your child’s unmatched perfection is like standing on the top of a mountain in a thunderstorm holding onto an umbrella– you may think you can see the world clearly but you are actually just an asshole, waiting for humiliation. Inevitably, lightening is gonna strike. Parenting gives you all the same results of electrocution; your brain will be fried, your hair will fall out, and you will not be able to talk in complete, coherent sentences. I get it– you’re happy that you’re the only person alive who has figured out the secret to raising children. Take a moment and bask…

One of Those Days
Do you ever have just one of those days? One of those days where it feels like the stars aligned in a perfect union to make your life a living hell? I had one of those recently. My five-year-old was complaining all weekend about not feeling well so Monday morning when she still wasn’t better, it was time to take her to all of our favorite places– the doctor! Now going to the doctor is not a pleasant experience for me. I dread it. Mostly we go in for routine check-ups but no matter the reason I always feel like we’re going to catch something worse than what we came…

Book Review: The Myth of Santa’s Beard
Girl From the North Country’s Review of… Title: “The Myth of Santa’s Beard” Written by: Sharon Thayer Illustrated by: Marci Chambers and Frank Pryor Rating: –It had some good parts. **A copy of this book was provided to me from the publishing company for my honest review Most enjoy a good Christmas book, but none as much as my children. They adore anything having to do with the season, and this story is a sweet look into one of their favorite holiday characters—Santa! The Myth of Santa’s Beard tells the story of how Santa’s beard grows each time a child does something positive for the world. Every time someone works…

What I’m Thankful For: 2016 Edition
Ugh you know when you’re all set to eat on Thanksgiving? You’ve been smelling the turkey for hours, picking at the stuffing when no one is looking…slipping a finger into the mashed potatoes while pretending to look for your glasses? (Just me?) And then you sit. And all the food is steaming on the table in front of you. And you’re kind of in a hurry to mix up the taters before someone sees your finger dent. Your fork is poised and like the winning pony on race day, you’re chomping at the bit. And then. Then someone suggests that everyone take a moment to say what they’re thankful for.…

Book Review: What a Wonderful World
Girl From the North Country’s Review of… Title: “WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD BY LOUIS ARMSTRONG” By: Kidioke Media Rating: –I really enjoyed it! **A copy of this book was provided to me from the publishing company for my honest review I love music. And I love exposing my kids to all kinds of music, including that from other generations. I was thrilled to see that Kidioke Media makes an array of these titles, including other awesome artists like Billy Joel and the Temptations. The one up for review today features one of my favorite songs– Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. Let me begin by saying that the quality of…

I’m Finally with Her.
Like most voters out there, for me this election has been one of the most interesting to date. It has been like watching reality TV, with all of the drama and none of the fun. We’ve been embroiled in controversies and left with two candidates that have the country wrought with contention. As a passionate Bernie Sanders supporter, I have been reluctant to fully yield my vote to Hillary. Obviously I’m with her over Trump, but my support has been dispassionate at best. I’ve been looking at this election as the choice between the lesser of two evils. I was never anti-Hillary, per say. I felt (and still do) that…

The Power of a Good Gif
We’ve all heard the expression, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” And it is. The awesome power that one photograph can yield is mind blowing. It can stir emotions, speak volumes and touch you deep down in your cold, cold heart. In the modern world, we have unleashed an array of ways to communicate, including using pictures and videos, sent to convey our thoughts and feelings. Now a true friend can read you by your micro-expression. But a true, best of friend, can read you by your gifs. They can fathom your meanings. And also reciprocate. (**I know my mother will be reading this and thinking, WHAT IS A…
